2003-2005
Worringer Platz, Düsseldorf
Based on the idea of the square as a meeting point and place of communication, this often southern romanticized idea is transferred to a square from the 1950s in the German winter that is heavily burdened by traffic. In response to the question posed by the city planning office about a square design that would give the “neglected” square a better quality of stay, a series of small experimental projects (water point, fire pit, temporary seating, portrait sign corner for passers-by, tea trolley, interviews with residents) were carried out in the previous summer to explore the potential of the square and the needs of its users. For the winter of 2003, the artist team Anne Mommertz and Oliver Gather will erect a glass house, equipped with a small wooden stove, which invites the square users to comment on their “most important” book. The books mentioned will be exhibited in the glass house together with their personal statements. Over the course of the project, a growing number of books are available for reading and discussion, which paint a lively picture of the communities on the square, particularly through the personal reviews of residents, homeless people, junkies and streetcar users. The work in the Glashaus was continued after the end of the project at the request of the residents with the “frühbeet” project until 2005 by Oliver Gather and Anne Mommertz. “frühbeet” was the framework for numerous works by artists from all disciplines who dealt directly with Worringer Platz.
