Mischpoke e.V. Mönchengladbach
Mischpoke e.V. is looking for vacant buildings to exhibit art.
“A glass-roofed shopping arcade: an architectural novelty for M.-gladbach between Hindenburgstrasse and Steinmetzstrasse (…) A width of 5.50 meters allows for comfortable and uninterrupted strolling and viewing. (…) As Steinmetzstrasse is around four meters higher than Hindenburgstrasse opposite, the passage will rise slightly towards the tax office. Stairs have not been built. Many housewives shop with their baby carriages; stairs would then prove to be a great hindrance.”
These were the plans in August of the post-war year 1949; on December 4, the first construction phase was completed over a length of around 75 meters, including the roofing. With a new roof construction in 1989, the atrium now gives way to the “Mönchengladbach Arcaden”, a good 60 years after its construction – not without a last flicker of the quality of the 22 specialist stores that had characterized the appearance of the arcade for more than half a century. Here, contemporary art in an architecture that is no longer contemporary shows that old and new can go well together, depending on their quality.
