“The main street in Rheydt is ghostly”, headlines an article in the Rheinische Post, “the street is downright extinct (…), shabby (…), desolate (…), the neglect is progressing (…)”, it says, and I am reminded of ghost towns in old western movies. I become curious.
I want to find out more about the urban atmosphere in this place, I want to know what it’s like to live here and I’m renting an apartment from April-August 2019, right here, in the middle of it all. My new neighbors help me to understand. The result is a 25-minute film, “Dampf und Dunst/Steam and Haze”, which portrays three places in the immediate vicinity of my apartment at Hauptstr. 18. All three locations – an exclusive confectionery café, a young beggar’s haunt and an e-cigarette store – are permeated by ideas of taste, pleasure and addiction. The film intertwines the three worlds where there are surprising connections: The lion’s share of the purchasable flavors in the e-cigarette store consists of cake varieties that can be “vaped” there, and the beggar woman, who finances her consumption through the gifts of the café visitors, considers cake to be an addictive drug.
