Tiling

Tiling-Kacheln

Tiles from neighbors’ basements, collected in a spiral and tiled out in a spiral over 10 square meters.

“I drive through the estate with a wheelbarrow and collect tiles, leftover tiles from the residents. And I do this in a spiral movement. Moving away from the project site, the 10 square meters, I collect them and then tile them out exactly as I found them, on this small area in the middle of my investigation.”

“A mapping from the basements of the neighborhood. (…) It was an amazingly good way of mapping this social space, this urban space, in a different way. The tiles (…) reflect something from the inside out…”

In the fall of 2011, new park benches and litter bins were installed and a 10 square meter area adjacent to the sidewalk was asphalted in the Kuenstraße/Florastraße park as part of a park renovation project. The artist Stefanie Klingemann developed “10qm – an art project in public space in Cologne” from the question of the meaning of this space. In collaboration with Diane Müller, artists were asked to create works for the space every month from April 2012. Since 2013, the artistic contributions have been accompanied by the artist Frank Bölter.
